Mid-winter has come.  The air continues to grow colder.  The city looks bare as the trees show us their branch structure.  The days were now short, dominated by the night.  Outside your breath turns into a frosty sight.  Inside from the cold, sitting by the window trying to read the sky, is little Grant of Stuyvesant Street, Staten Island.

This winter Grant has only one wish, and with winter half over he does not want to miss, the dance of a snowflake caught by the wind.  The warmth a good snowstorm carries with it.  It has been years since he built a snowman, or eaten a snow cone surprise.  That special treat Grant's Mum makes, by mixing Kool-Aid and snowflakes.  He would sure love to have one for dessert tonight.

Grant 's Mum watched the news and she heard the weather.  She declared, "Snow is coming, three to six inches or better!"  So for hours Grant waited by the window and stared, watching the sunset without a cloud in the air, watching and counting the brilliant stars shine.  And just as he went to turn out his light...

The stars began to disappear.  The night turned fierce, the wind howled, and Grant filled with fear.  A bitter chill ran right down Grant's spine.  Visions that frightened him clouded his mind.  And just when you'd think this winter storm would bite, silence devoured the entire night.  Startled by the quick change of events, Grant flung open the window and stuck out his head.
